Oil-Based Lubricants
Oil-based lubes are the longest-lasting lube category — a few drops can last an entire session, and they don't dry out. They're also typically the most natural-feeling and the most moisturizing. But there's one critical thing to know upfront: oil-based lubes are NOT safe with latex or polyisoprene condoms. Oil degrades both materials and dramatically increases the risk of breakage. If you're using condoms, switch to water-based or silicone-based lube instead.
When oil-based lube makes sense
- Solo masturbation (no condoms involved).
- Couples sex without condoms (long-term partners, IUDs, etc.).
- External erotic massage (skin-to-skin, no penetration).
- With non-latex barriers like nitrile gloves (most nitrile is oil-resistant — verify on the box).
Top oil-based lubes at Condomania
- Boy Butter Original — Coconut oil and silicone blend. Long-lasting, smooth, melts to body temperature. Our top-selling oil lube.
- SPUNK Natural — Coconut + avocado oil blend. All-natural, vegan, no synthetic ingredients.
- Boy Butter Extreme — Coconut-oil-based with benzocaine for desensitization. Anal-focused; not condom-safe.
- Sliquid Soul — Pure organic coconut oil base. Doubles as a body moisturizer.
- Gun Oil Stroke 29 — Specifically formulated as a masturbation cream. Thicker oil-based texture for solo use.
Oil-based lube safety
- Don't use with latex or polyisoprene condoms. Period. Even small amounts of oil dramatically weaken these materials.
- Be cautious with silicone toys. Most oils are okay with silicone, but spot-test first. Coconut oil specifically can leave residue on silicone surfaces.
- Vaginal use: Some oil-based lubes (especially coconut oil) can disrupt vaginal pH and contribute to yeast infections in sensitive users. If you have any history of recurrent yeast infections, water-based is safer.
- Stains. Oil-based lubes stain bedsheets and fabric. Lay down a towel.
If condom safety is a priority, browse our water-based lubes or silicone lubes instead. Our complete lube catalog has comparison tools across categories.
Frequently asked questions
Why isn't oil-based lube safe with condoms?
Oil molecules break down the natural rubber latex and polyisoprene that most condoms are made of. The condom can develop microscopic tears within minutes of contact with oil — small enough to not be visible, but large enough to allow sperm and pathogens through. The condom failure rate with oil-based lubes is dramatically higher than with water- or silicone-based lubes.
Can I use oil-based lube with non-latex condoms?
Polyurethane condoms are oil-compatible, but polyurethane is largely discontinued. Polyisoprene (the most common latex-free type, like Durex Avanti Bare and SKYN) is NOT oil-compatible — it has the same vulnerability as latex. Lambskin condoms are oil-compatible but don't protect against STIs. Bottom line: if you need condoms, don't use oil-based lube.
Is coconut oil safe to use as lube?
Yes for solo and non-condom partner use. Pure coconut oil is non-toxic, body-safe, and naturally antimicrobial. For sensitive vaginal users, watch for yeast infection patterns — coconut oil can disrupt pH for some bodies. Don't use with latex condoms.
Will oil-based lube stain my sheets?
Yes. Most oil-based lubes will leave visible stains on light fabrics, even after washing. Lay down a towel before use. Hot water and dish soap (or a degreasing detergent) work better than regular laundry detergent for removing oil stains from fabric.
