5 Sex Toy Mistakes You’re Probably Making
Sex toys are one of the best ways to experience pleasure in the bedroom alone or with a partner. However, there are a few common mistakes made when it comes to using toys. Check out these 5 sex toy errors that you may be guilty of:
#1 you’re mixing up dildos and vibrators
Dildos and vibrators can both offer amazing pleasure to their user, however they offer very different sensations. If you’re looking for a new toy – be clear on the type of sensation and experience you’re looking for – in order to find the right pleasure fit.
A vibrator’s primary function is vibration. There are external only, internal only and internal/external vibrators. There are also smaller, pocket vibrators – or larger vibrators intended for penetration and clitoral stimulation. Various types of vibrators can range from single speed or vibration styles to multifunction models.
A dildo’s main function is penetration. While some dildos do vibrate, they often have removable vibrating attachments and tend to have less powerful motors than vibrators.
#2 you’re not caring for your toy properly
To preserve the life of your toy and your health, it’s important to handle it with care, including ensuring you clean your toy properly after every use. Not only does this protect against the transfer of bodily fluids, which can put you at risk for infection, but it also protects the longevity of your toy.
Never go from anal use to vaginal use without cleaning your toy first.
When cleaning your toy, you can purchase a toy cleaner – or you can choose to wash your toy promptly after use with soap and warm water.
If your toy is made of glass, stainless steel, pure silicone or Pyrex, you can sterilize it by putting it in boiling water for a few minutes. Caution – only do this if your toy does not contain a motor.
If you want to be extra cautious when using toys with multiple partners, consider using a condom with your toy.
#3 you’re using the wrong kind of lube
The type of lube you use with your toy is more important than you’d think - silicone lube and silicone toys do not mix, and can actually warp a silicone toy or even start to dissolve it. Terrifying! If you do happen to accidently get silicone lube on a silicone toy, wash it off immediately with soap and water and it should be fine. Caution – if you are using condoms with your toys, note that lubricated condoms tend to use silicone lubricant.
Water-based lube is your safest and best bet. Not only can they be used with any material, but many water-based formulas are among our among our most popular, including Pink Water Lubricant, Astroglide Gel Lubricant and Sliquid H2O Intimate Lubricant.
